1:21 p.m. – Email update from Becky
She got to speak to Mom last night during their “shift” with Lindsay. Keith spends the night with Lindsay, and then Dan and Karen (Keith’s parents) take over in the morning. Mom and Dad come in the afternoon and stay until Keith comes again. She’s never alone.
Lindsay is off of the respirator and breathing well on her own although she’s still sore and speaking is hard because of the tube that was down her throat. They also removed the nasogastric tube that went down her nose to empty her stomach (she kept gagging on it).
2:18 p.m. – Email update from Marci
Mom called and said that Lindsay had a bad night. She was throwing up a lot and one of her lungs started filling with fluid. They tried to insert an ng tube (I don’t know what that is), but it came out her mouth. They took it out and caused her throat to bleed. They are trying to get as much air into her lungs as possible, but she keeps fighting to take the equipment off of her face. They even talked about putting her in restraints and my poor tender-hearted Dad had to leave the room. She kept asking for Keith and after she said, “I can’t do this anymore!” Mom called him. She calmed down after Keith got there and fell asleep.
The doctors say that it’s pretty normal for adults to have fluid in their lungs after this surgery (being put on the heart and lung machine). Lindsay asked this morning if she’d had her surgery yet. She’s so full of drugs that they have to repeat everything over and over again.
10:36 p.m. – Email update from Marci
Lindsay obviously had a crappy day. She doesn’t want to wear the C-pap (the air machine) over her mouth and nose. She’s not allowed to eat or drink anything. She doesn’t want to be touched and hates being in the hospital. Mom is having a hard time watching her struggle, but the doctors say it’s normal for an adult to have these symptoms after this difficult surgery.
